When we receive the helmet from it being shipped in or hand delivered to us, we immediately get to work. We tag the helmet with a unique ID number and assess the helmet for damage. From this assessment we are able to determine how much work will need to be done in order to get the helmet back to its near original condition.
After the helmet has been properly tagged and identified, the sanitization process begins. First, the helmet will get hung and put into a confined area where it will be washed off with extremely hot water to remove bacteria, contaminants, dust, and organic growth. Then, the interior of the helmet will undergo further cleaning with a detergent mixture to remove any lingering bacteria or contaminants while leaving behind a fresh, clean smell. Lastly, the helmet is sprayed with a heat activated anti-bacterial spray to prevent odor and bacteria from coming back.
Once we've completed the initial sanitization process to make sure that the helmet is clean and safe to work on, we move on to the next phase of the reconditioning process: deconstruction.
Helmets for different sports may vary in design and construction, but one thing remains the same - they are made up of many different parts, all of which must be removed for proper reconditioning and/or repainting. For instance, football, lacrosse, and hockey helmets all have a facemask that needs to be taken off before we can properly handle the helmet. Other types of helmets, such as baseball and softball helmets, also have different parts that need to be removed, such as ear flaps, chin straps, and screws.
After the helmet has been deconstructed we move onto the next step in the process, which is to prep the helmet for painting. In our helmet prep we begin by sanding off all of the old paint. This will reveal scratches from hits that went deeper than just the paint (only relevant for football). All scratches will then be filled back up and sealed (Only relevant for football). After old paint is sanded off, the helmet will be coated with primer so that the paint will correctly adhere to the helmet's surface.
After the primer has been applied and is dry, the helmet is ready for painting! The helmet will have its unique, custom color ready to be applied by our professional painters in our state of the art spray booth. After being painted with the color of your choice, it is set aside to dry. After drying, the helmet then receives its clear coat which will help the paint and surface of the helmet stay looking fresh and also reduce effects of wear and tear on the helmet. Once the clear coat has been applied, the helmet is set aside on a drying rack.
After being completely painted and dried, the helmet is ready for reconstruction. The interior padding and protective material is put back inside and the facemask is reattached to the helmet. The helmet will now receive one additional cleaning to ensure that it is thoroughly cleaned and sealed properly. Here we will check to make sure that the helmet is the correct color and that it has been completely painted and put together correctly.
After the helmet has been completely reviewed, it is ready for pickup! Your helmet will be in near original condition and will feel as it did when you first got it! If you shipped it to us we will box it up and ship it to the address of your choice.
